In order to restore the abundance, distribution, diversity, and long term productivity of wild steelhead and their habitats to assure healthy stocks, hatchery programs need to be removed from management plans where ever possible. Plus, greater priority needs to be given to the long term sustainability of wild steelhead stocks.
The Wild Steelhead Coalition supports the development of Wild Steelhead Management Zones. Designation of the Wild Steelhead Management Zones will allow for improved steelhead management and eliminate the ecological and genetic change occurring annually from hatchery steelhead. This designation will also provide the opportunity of wild runs to increase in abundance, the early run to recover, increase the spatial distribution and productivity of wild stocks and provide improved wild steelhead fishing during the full season. This change will also help us understand how other wild steelhead rivers can be managed to provide healthier stocks and prevent depletion from future increases in fishing effort, hatchery impacts and climate change.
