Category: Action Alerts | Posted by: Jonathan | 7/25/14 | Comments: 3

Summary: In advance of their July 29, 2014 hearing, tell the WA Senate Natural Resources Committee that you support wild steelhead recovery in Puget Sound.

The Washington State Senate Natural Resources & Parks Committee will hold a hearing on July 29, 2014 at 10:00AM to discuss the recent Puget Sound steelhead hatchery litigation and settlement between theĀ Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) and Wild Fish Conservancy (WFC). The hearing was called by the committee chair, Senator Kirk Pearson (R – Monroe) and will include presentations from WDFW, WFC, Puget Sound Tribes, NOAA Fisheries, recreational fishers, and fishing businesses. Please take a moment to tell the Committee that you support rivers managed for wild fish, not hatchery fish, and the improved sportfishing opportunity.

This email is to voice my support for wild steelhead management. While I do support some hatchery fish management, it is imperative that priority be give to wild fish while we still can do so. As a longtime steelheader I love to catch these fish, but know this hatchery carnival ride cannot go on forever. Our rivers were meant to be natural and wild, not just a put and take fishery. We still have wild fish. Let’s work to expand their population and enhance their habitat. They are superior all the way around to hatchery fish.

It should be easy to see that hatcheries do not produce very many fish and quality of the fish is low. The cost is very high with not much to show for it. I believe hatcheries were going to enhance to total number of fish. The opposite has occurred. Please let mother nature do the job.

I DO NOT support the Wild Steelhead Coalition and their right wing ways. While I do agree we need to protect wild steelhead, removing hatcheries is not the way to go about it. Selective harvest has a much greater success to the success of wild steelhead then removing hatcheries. Think about it…without hatcheries, there will be more wild steelhead caught and killed in gill nets. How does that protect the wild stock???
