Yes it does, Jeff. Check out the latest issue of The Drake (Spring 2012), author Steven Hawley has an article about hatcheries and another about the Searsville Dam.

Just read “Recovering A Lost River”, It is a great read, guaranteed to raise your blood pressure a few points when you read how we are so being screwed by the people who should by doing their best to save our salmon and steelhead.

It most likely will have to be approved under a Major Rules Proposal Cycle at the WDFW, which I think happens this year.

Of course you can always email the Director and individuals at the WDFW to let them know your feelings and/or engage in a discussion about the issue.

Unfortunately, wild steelhead harvest will still be open on the Sol Duc from February 16 to April 30. This ruling helps to minimize the interaction of wild and hatchery fish.

Here’s some more info on the WSMZ from the WDFW’s website:

Wild management zones, also known as wild stock gene banks, are designed to preserve key populations of wild fish by minimizing interactions with hatchery-produced fish. Research has shown that hatchery fish are often less genetically diverse and can impact wild stocks through interbreeding or competition for food or habitat.

This is a bold and inspiring action by the WSC and its partners in the fight to restore native Steelhead & Salmon to the Elwha. The state and federal governments have proven over the years they are incapable of properly “managing” wild fish stocks in the Pacific northwest, especially Washington State. Now we will see whether the best available science and knowledge will win out over bureaucratic expediency.

Take a tip from Montana. They have for decades refused to stock fish and they now have some of the healthiest populations of true “wild” trout any place outside of Alaska. While it may take a few years longer to restore the population, the longterm benefits are much greater. True “wild” steelhead back in the Elwha again!
