Are we at a time where there is no place left to go? For this angler, it seems we are approaching a destination I hate to admit or begrudge to accept. The wild, rainforest rivers of the West end of the Olympic Peninsula (OP) is a very special place with a race of legendary wild winter-run steelhead that could rival the world renown Skeena system to the North.
We were honored when Ryan Peterson of The Fly Shop in California approached us for inclusion in this succinct yet powerful short film that captures the essence of the steelhead environment.
WSC submitted this document to the WDFW in June 2011 and made the recommendation that the Snider Creek Hatchery on the Sol Duc River be terminated. The Olympic Peninsula boasts many great steelhead rivers, but the Sol Duc seems to be the best fit to be designated as a Wild Steelhead Management Area (WSMA) for a multitude of reasons. Among other topics, Burge and McMillan explain the unique benefits of the Sol Duc spawning habitat as well as the harmful impacts of Snider hatchery fish on wild winter steelhead.
