NOAA Puget Sound Steelhead Critical Habitat Comments
The WSC provided comments for critical habitat designation for the Puget Sound Wild Steelhead DPS. The WSC analyzed the Proposed critical habitat designation map and found specific areas that should be included in the critical habitat designation. Well Documented Science and research has indicated these areas are critical to wild Steelhead adults and juvenile migration. The WSC also commented on habitat degredation and channelization of rivers. These impacts must be addressed in the critical habitat designation as well.
WDFW Commission Appeal Letter
The WSC was concerned by how the WDFW accepted and rejected rule proposals without public comment. WDFW initially selects rule proposals for the WDFW commission to hear comments on and move forward. The WSC is concerned that many well written, scientific based, rule proposals were being neglected by WDFW Staff. The WDFW Commission has now taken steps to allow public review on specific rule proposals that have been rejected by WDFW staff.
WSC Pushes for Barbless Hooks on the Lower Columbia
The WSC was concerned by Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife going against the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife’s policy to make the Columbia River barbless hook only to decrease mortality on ESA listed species. The WSC reminded ODFW that this regulation was aimed at benefitting the 12 ESA listed Salmonid species inhabiting the Columbia river.
