Sign the Petition: Protect Thompson River Wild Steelhead

INTERNATIONAL CONSERVATION GROUPS CALL FOR LONG OVERDUE PROTECTIONS OF INTERIOR FRASER RIVER WILD STEELHEAD AS POPULATIONS FACE EXTINCTION

This year, the iconic Thompson River is expected to have less than 70 steelhead return. The Chilcotin River will only see half that number. Other populations of Interior Fraser River Steelhead have already been lost.

For years, scientists and conservationists have called for emergency protections and effective recovery plans in an attempt to head off the complete loss of these devastated stocks of wild steelhead. Again and again, despite the official recommendations of Canada’s Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC), the Canadian government has failed (or actively suppressed) the desperate need to protect Interior Fraser River Steelhead before they completely collapse.

This week, an international coalition of fishery conservation groups are once again calling for the Canadian government to protect Interior Fraser River Steelhead under Canada’s Species at Risk Act (SARA). The Wild Steelhead Coalition is proud to be a co-signer of this letter and is calling for anglers and conservationists to add their name to the petition demanding immediate SARA protections for Interior Fraser River Steelhead.

These incredible fish are very near extinction. There is no time left and the Canadian government simply must act. Please sign the petition at the button above or at the link here. Then, be sure share this petition widely among the steelheaders in your network. We cannot wait and let these iconic wild steelhead runs finally slip away.
